Reasons I Prefer to Travel Solo in my Camper Van
It's peaceful traveling and camping solo, while writing and enjoying nature and being creative.
We're seeing some scary authoritarian stuff in the Trump administration that's a threat to our democracy. Fear and uncertainty about the future grips Americans, pushing them towards panic.
Traveling alone makes me more nervous now than it did a year ago. I'm not letting fear ruin my life. Violence can happen just about anywhere. The outdoors are safer for me because there are fewer people around.
I Trust My Instincts
My gut feeling's always right. My motto is: If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
I still travel solo with my Tibetan Terrier, and I avoid isolated spots. There are just too many homeless people who are transient who could become a threat.
I’ve learned to trust my gut feelings about locations and situations. If something doesn’t feel right, I move on — no questions asked.
Being prepared has given me confidence
I’m a faithful member of AAA. I wouldn’t be on the road without their service. But before hitting the road, I make sure basic vehicle maintenance is up to date. Knowledge truly is power, and being prepared has given me confidence.
Freedom Outweights Fear
The joy of waking up to new surroundings, meeting interesting people, and creating my own adventures far out weigh any initial fears I have. Being cautious is wise, but letting fear hold me back from living my dreams isn’t.
Solo van life taught me that independence doesn’t mean isolation and being alone doesn’t mean being lonely.
In my case, I prefer the peace and quiet, so I can focus on writing my novel and publishing on Substack.
Van life gives me the best of both worlds, while being smart about safety while traveling solo.
